Question
I've got a 1 year old miniature pinscher that is potty trained. In the past week she has pooped in the house several times a day.  We've recently had a baby and don't give the dogs as much attention as before. The baby is 3 months old And since the baby came she always want to be next to us or sitting on my lap.  Do I need to start potty training back to the basics Or is she Acting out.  Does she need more walks or more playtime. I'm at a loss.  We are considering getting rid of her.  Please help

Thank you,
Fab

Answer
If she was originally potty trained (that means no accidents ever) then my guess is that the disruptions in your household are causing her to be more anxious and that can cause house training regression.  So, yes, starting from the beginning is good.  Did you always have the dog in your lap prior to becoming pregnant???  If so, think about that from the dog's perspective.  She has been unceremoniously dumped (you even used the phrase that you are thinking of "getting rid of" her!).  One thing to try is to avoid thinking of her as spiteful or jealous, and start thinking of her as confused and hurt.  Now, think about starting to train her to LOVE being on the floor when you have baby in your lap.  Set up a training scenario.  Put a nice soft bed next to you on the floor.  Put a small stuffed Kong toy there for your dog to lap at.  (Stuff it with a few kibbles mixed with a tiny bit of lamb baby food, peanut butter, or cream cheese).  Let her lap the food as long as you have baby in your lap.  In a few minutes (or even seconds) put baby in her crib/playpen and take away the Kong.  (You can politely exchange it for a treat such as cheese or chicken).  What the dog learns is that when you have baby in your lap, great things happen for her *on the floor.*
