Picking out the puppy

Question
What are the most important things to look for when picking out the new puppy?  We made a choice today but have the option of changing our choice if we want to.  I chose the runt of the litter primarily because she was, but also because a friend who shows cockers said that she was the gem of the litter.  What can you tell about their temperament/personality at 6 weeks???

Answer
Hi Joni,  Temperment & health are the two most important things to look for when picking out a puppy.  Temperment not only means hers, but also her parents and if possible her grandparents (especially with Cockers since they can get snappy when they get older).  You want an outgoing puppy who is at first a little cautious about strangers, but then warms up fairly quickly.  You don't want a puppy who runs up barking or growling as they tend to be too assertive which can cause you problems later on.  An inquisitive puppy is ideal, and you definitely do not want one who cringers in the corner.  Don't judge the runt because she is a runt.  I've known many a runt who has grown well past their siblings.  Does your friend consider her the gem because of looks or temperment.  Looks don't mean anything if she's snapping at kids by a year of age.  You should never buy a puppy unless you can actually socialize with both parents (not just see them in a room) and if possible, go visit the grandparents or previous siblings to see what the parents have produced before.  That way you have an idea of what she will turn out to be.
Healthwise you basically want her to look clean, clear eyes, ears and mouth.  Shiny, clean smelling coat.  No ribs showing, nor a bloaty belly (which can indicate worms), unless she is still in the middle of the series of wormings to rid her of worms.  At 6 weeks she should have her 1st shots & her 1st worming.  Most reputable breeders will give you a year guarantee on health & genetic defects.  Hope this helps.
