give a dog a bone

Question
My boyfriend and I have a two year old boxer.  We both work in a steakhouse and often have guests that want to take rib bones and t-bones home for their dogs.  Although we've never given him rib bones,we used to give him t-bones every once in a while, but we've heard so many different ideas about how safe and unsafe bones are for dogs that we don't bring them home anymore. We have also heard that rawhide tends to stick to dogs' stomaches. Are any of these safe for dogs?

Answer
Hi Hayley,  The only bones safe to give dogs are the knuckle bones of knees.  Basically the huge soup bones that don't splinter.  The danger of bones is of them splintering in a dog's intestine and then puncturing the intestine.  As far as rawhides, pretty much common sense is what is important for rawhides.  Giving too many at once can upset their stomach, and obviously too small of ones that they can choke on aren't safe either.  Hope this helps,
