Question
Hi, Belle my beautiful girl is a blaack pug. She is 3years old. This is the second time she has really been in heat. The vet said that was common in small dogs, but I dont know. Her "boyfriend" is coming over in a bit, How long should they be around each other, and how many times should they mate? I have no idea what Im doing, so any advise would be wonderful

Answer
Hi,  A dog's heat cycle breaks done into 3 segments basically. The 1st 7-10 days, they tend to bleed heavier and will not accept a male, the 2nd 7-10 day segment their vulva will swell and they will be willing to accept a male. The last segment also will last approx. 7-10 days and they will be going out of heat and not accept a male.  To be successful it is normally recommended to put the two dogs together 3 times, a day apart each time and let them tie once.  This gives them a break inbetween and lets the boy rest.  Hope this helps,
