Question
i have a lhasa apso dog and his whole body except to legs and some small part of his skin had turned black. do you know some cure or anything to turned back my his skin??

Answer

Hi Lisa,

Darkening of the skin (called hyperpigmentation) is usually only a problem when it's associated with hair loss. That said, there is a condition called "Black skin disease" in dogs (also known as Alopecia X) that can cause hair loss and strongly pigmented skin, or black skin, as the name suggests.

To rule out a medical problem your vet should test your dog to rule out Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism), hypothyroidism, a chronic skin infection, and reproductive hormone disorders. There are no particular tests that can be performed to diagnose Alopecia X. This is the reason why several tests will be performed.

In some cases, the disease can go away without medication. Your vet will determine whether medication is needed in your dog's case. The drugs prescribed will depend on the possible cause of the disease. If your dog has thyroid problems, hormonal therapy will be recommended. Talk to your vet about possible side effects of a hormonal therapy that can lead to diabetes or other serious complications. If black skin disease in your dog is linked to obesity or allergies, the vet will advise you to keep your dog on a diet and avoid certain allergens. If the cause of black skin disease is not detected, your vet will monitor your pet, but will not prescribe any medication.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
