Question
I was just wondering what is considered a filler in dog food. I read an answer to a question on this web site and it stated that a few dog foods did not have any fillers (ex. Science Diet,Iams)Are corn, whole grain corn, corn meal, Chicken-by-products not fillers?  Thanks for helping I get a lot of conflicting info.

Answer
Hi andy;
That is right. Those brands do not have the fillers. That is why you feed less food per feeding, and there is less poop to scoop.
Non nutritious things like, extra cornmeal, or anything that is cheap and makes the bag fuler so it looks like you get more food for the money.
Some of the real off brands even use sawdust.
Chicken by-products, and beef bi-products are things like, skin, organs that would normally be thrown away, beef lips, and stomachs.
Things like that are full of calories and cholesterole, but little to no nourishment.
I feed Natural Choice by Nutro.
It also does not have fillers.
There is propaganda out now that Iams owns these cheaper brands too, Not so. I looked up their corporate papers where such holdings HAVE to be declared.
It is also rumored Iams uses animals for cruel testing.
Not so.
When a company is undoing the cheaper products, the most often used tactic if for rumors to be spread to make the better products and the companies that make them, appear to be liars.
Remember the Coca cola. battle over aspertame versus sacharin?
Back in the 70s, if you are an older geezer like me.
They succeeded in getting Tab off the market, because Tab was so much better tasting that the sacharin loaded diet Pepsie crap.
They did it with a cancer scare.
I likes the good old days, when , if you slandered a product in print or other advertising, you had to PROOVE what you were saying, not just throw accusations out there.
Stick with the better brands.
You feed less because of the no-fillers, so the cost turns out to be pretty close to the same anyway, and your pet enjoys a longer and healthier life.
