fish breath on 13 month old pup.

Question
My 13 month old puppy has the most "offensively horrible fish breath."  I changed his diet to beneful from iams last month and it was much improved for a few weeks.  Now it's back and in full force.  I read that blocked anal glands could possibly be the cause.  Is that possible?  If so, would you recommend the procedure of unblocking the glands at home, or should that only be done by a professional?

Answer
Hi Laura. If his teeth are clean, which they should be b/c he's so young, this may be something internal. Younger dogs don't have very many anal gland issues, this usually only occurs in some dogs as they age. And if this was the problem, there would be a horrible smell from his rear, not mouth. Some GI issues can cause dogs to have really bad breath. Excess acid in the stomach, for example. Either way, I would really recommend having a physical done by your vet. Since he's so young he shouldn't being having horrible breath issues. There may be an underlying problem that needs to be addressed. Let me know how he does!
