Question
I have an 11-12 year old who has been pretty healthy her whole life.  Recently she has developed a slight limp (3 days now).  She is also constantly licking the same paw I have examined it and can not see anything strange with it.  She also around the same time for the first time I've ever noticed is eating a lot of grass, she is eating her food as well and no vomiting but has been sounding like she is trying to force back up the grass. Thanks

Answer
Rodney,

Limping can be symptomatic of many problems, from a sprained ankle to arthritis setting in to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Without being examined by a veterinarian, there's not going to be any way we can diagnose her. If you are wanting to put off a vet visit for financial reasons, the best thing I can suggest is to pick up some Ascriptin. It's Aspirin coated with Maalox and it is easier for their systems to absorb. She can have an adult dose once a day with her food. You could also use MSM, which acts as a natural pain killer. In fact, for a Golden her age it would be beneficial to start her on a Glucosamine and Chondroitin with MSM regiment. 1500 mgs of Glucosamine a day (the Chondroiton is usually 'built in' to the Glucosamine and the dosage will be a little less) and 2000 mgs a day of MSM. It's a natural way to help with bone and joint issues, and its affordable - you can find them in the vitamin aisle at Wal-Mart.

Eating grass is relatively normal in dogs, as is throwing it up. If it just started in conjunction with the limping, it could mean she has an upset stomach or is just in pain in general. If this doesn't clear up on its own pretty soon you'll want to take her to her doctor - but until then, I'd recommend just trying to alleviate her pain and keep her pretty sedatary (lots of resting inside).

Good luck!
