very sick/dying Jack Russell

Question
QUESTION: I have a Jack Russell who is probably 10 years old. Last night she went missing, and our other dog found her for us. She appeared bloated and stiff. We brought her inside and tried to make her as warm and comfortable as possible, deducing she had probably been poisoned. Her breathing is fluctuating from rapid to shallow to almost normal, for awhile her back legs were drawn up to her tummy, occasionally she would "paddle" them, then for a bit all four legs were held out stiff and her head back, her little tail rigid and up. After awhile she seemed to relax and appears almost peaceful, and not as bloated, although very sick. I cannot afford the vet, sadly, due to economical hardship. I read about strychnine poisoning and that as an alternative to charcoal you can try milk and egg whites to bind the poison, so I used a syringe to place it inside her cheek and she swallowed nearly all of it. I truly expected her to be gone before morning, but she is still hanging on..I feel so bad and don't know what to do for her. I did not think to induce vomiting, and she appeared to be convulsing by the time we found her anyway. I don't know if I should give her something as a laxative. Yesterday two noteworthy things happened-in the afternoon she ate bad sweet potatoes then threw them up, which is partially why I didn't induce vomiting. Later a bird nearly flew into my head, which was weird but I really didn't think anything of it until I read a dog can be poisoned by eating a poisoned bird or rodent. Being a Jack Russell, if that crazy bird had fallen anywhere in our yard she would have devoured it. Any advice would be appreciated.

ANSWER: Krystal-

She needs to go to the vet, either to be stabalized or euthenized. She is indeed dying, and at this stage there is not much you can do without RADICAL treatment. The first two home remedies for toxic shock are for way before she gets this bad.

Many vets will euthenize for as little as $20. Some, will do it for free in situations like this. You can even call a shelter to help her be put out of her misery, but please do something, this is very very painful for her.

I am so sorry.

QUESTION: Thank you for your response. She did indeed die, although she received medical attention. A local wildlife sanctuary took her in and those amazing people did the very best they could to save her, to no avail. At one point they had her stabilized and thought she may pull through, but in the end she did not. It was a little easier knowing that she had some caring folks taking care of her and that she was sedated and on pain meds. Thanks again.

Answer
I'm so sorry you lost her, but very grateful you got her to someone who could help ease her pain, and stabalizing her so that you could say goodbye im sure was a very sweet moment.

Even though she was not in your yard when she went into TS, I would comb your house and yard just to make sure she didn't pick something up before she ran away. Do you use antifreeze? That is quite common this time of year, dogs love the taste and it is DEADLY.
