Question
We have recently adopted a stray beagle and it is now about 3 weeks.  Yesterday, he had a full day of activity and ate normal as well as eliminated on schedule.  However he woke up this morning with no appetite, no thirst, slight trembling and only after this afternoon did he eliminate, but with grass and a dark red liquid along with it.  Although he now seems better, what could be the problem?

Answer
Hello Lawrence and thanks for your question.

I would have to ask if you have had this dog vetted?

The dark red liquid you mentioned is blood. It is coming from a condition known as enteritis and can be caused by many things. Parvo being one of the worst case scenarios. There is also the chance that he has eaten something that has injured him inside and it cause some intestinal bleeding, which in turn, may have caused some infection or inflammation. It could be a blockage, parasites, virus, or a number of other things that could be causing this condition.

You say he seems better, but is he eating and drinking? It may be best to take him to your vet to get an exam and find out what's going on with him. Besides, if he hasn't been checked out, he will need some vaccinations and a de-worming.

Please keep me posted on this.
