Question
I have s 4-5 month old Jack Russel... He has prtty much mastered the art of house training Which is fantastic! however,  My partner and I work shift work whcih means they dog may be left on his own for up to  (however no longer than) 4 hours at a time! The dog will pee and poo in this time in the Kitchen which is where he is kept when we're out. I know he does it because he is on his own but I have no ideas on how to get him to adjust to being on his own? And encourage him to wait! There have even been times I've popped out for no more than 30 mins while my partner has been at work, and I've come home to mess!

Any ideas please?

Also on a general note I wanted your ideas on crate traning alot of people reconmmend it but I'm still trying to adjust to idea its not cruel lol!

Answer
Hi Kylie;
Do you feed him just before you lkeave for work?
That could be the problem.
Feed him, take him out to do his business, and after he poops, play with him, getting him to run around, and be very active.
This will activate his bowels so that if he needs to, he will finish emptying them.
themn take him inside.
He does need to have water when left for that long, but don't leave food down for him.
If his bowels are emptied out, he will not be able to poop, unless he is doing tis for spite ( could bem, but not that likely) and deliberately holds himself.
playing until you are sure he has emptied out well can make him not be able to hold it for so long.
That 30 minutes goe sounds like he is maybe doing it to punish you for leaving him.
Try the taking out, no food left down etc to make sure he Is doing it for spite before you start the scolding.
If he is doing it deliberately, when you find a mess, take him to it, point to it and say things like " Just look ate that !!! you know better!!!!! Shame on you!!!"
Clean it up with im watching, chewing out his little butt all the while you are cleaning.
Dogs like children, and for that matter everybody else, HATES to be nagged.
If the naging gets to be more punishment that he gets satisfaction in spiting you, he will give up.
If it is accidental, which IS a possibility, there are litter boxes for dogs now, with a special litter.
Put one of these in the kitchen, so he can go if he has to, and stay out of trouble too.
Hope this helps.
