Question
Tonight our dog vomitted three times, the color was yellow and light in weight. She did this one other time but other than that she is really active and very happy. Eats twice a day and drinks water really good.

Answer
Hi Terry,

The stuff your dog threw up is called bile, by itself throwing up bile doesn't mean much except that your dog probably threw up on an
empty stomach..

If your dog is eating and drinking normally, her poop and urine output look normal, and she's otherwise acting normal, it's probably nothing to worry about. However, any dog taking any NSAID (like Rimadyl), even intermittently, should have her kidney and liver enzyme levels checked regularly to make sure the med isn't having a deleterious effect on those organs. A simple blood test will tell you if all is well in that regard.

Sometimes, a snack given between meals and just before bedtime, such as a milk bone, will "cure" this. You can try adding a teaspoon of plain non-fat yogurt to your dog's meals. There could be an imbalance of the bacteria in the intestine just past the stomach.

If however, the throwing up continues, you should have your dog examined by your vet. Sometimes this kind of vomiting is a symptom of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)  or some other condition that causes a decrease in gastric mobility. At that time, you also might consider doing some simple testing, like fecal exams, to make sure there isn't an easy problem that can be corrected.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
