Question
Hi, we've  gotten a shih tzu @ 9wks, and is now 12 wks. She is almost housetrained, does well in a crate at night and on a 2x/day feeding schedule. My daughter and I are home with her now, since I'm a teacher and she's off for the summer.  However, I'm concerned when school starts back again in Sept. She'll be alone from 7:00- 2:45 most days.
Right now, we get up and take her out @ 5:30. She pees/poops. Then we feed her by 6:00 ( to try to get her on schedule), and take her out again by 6:50. Howver, she won't poop after she eats- only pees.  She has to go around 10-11:00, but when school starts, we won't be there.  Any suggestions? Thanks!

Answer
Exercise stimulates bowel movements.  Try walking her around after she eats.  She will be older by the time school starts.  By then, with her movement restricted by being in the crate, she should be able to go longer.  It would be best if somebody can give her a mid day break.  If nobody can make it home at lunch, see if a neighbor or a professional dog walker can give her a break.
