Question
Hi Kristin,

In our community it is a common belief that dogs should not be fed with food containing sugar. Is there any harm in giving sugar to dogs?

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Suresh,

Your dog doesn't need sugar, he or she is sweet enough already!

Sugar in small amounts isn't a dangerous, it's not that sugars are toxic to your dog, rather, if your your dog receives sweet snacks you are risking your dogs health and teeth. Just like if you were to eat too many sweets.

You may notice that the best quality dog foods do not contain any corn sweeteners, or artificial sweeteners. Sugars and sweeteners simply do not contribute to a healthy dog's diet. If you want to give your dog a sweet treat, try an apple wedge (no seeds), a bit of banana, or a baby carrot or two!

Best of luck,

Patti
