Question
One week ago my 11 yr. old lab Sheba was diagnosed with bronchitis, now one week later her brother Max is having the same symptoms. My question is : Is there a chance they both got it for the "first time ever" or am I'm possibly dealing with something else that has the same symptoms as bronchitis? Is it contagious from one dog to another?

Answer
Hi Jenny,

Kennel cough is an infectious Bronchitis (also called Bordetella Infection). It's an infection spread from dog to dog through the air, and obviously activities resulting in close congregation of dogs results in the likelihood of the spread of the disease. It was for this reason that it was originally called kennel cough. Dogs would regularly pick up the infection when boarded. Other activities such as visiting the grooming parlor, shows and training classes can also be a source of spread of the disease.

Infectious Bronchitis may be treated with cough suppressants to provide comfort during natural recovery. Alternatively, antibiotics and cough suppressants can be combined.

If your other dog is now also showing symptoms, you shouldn't delay in having him examined by your veterinarian. Early treatment makes for a faster recovery.

Best of luck,

Patti
