Question
Hello!I am hoping to adopt a 9 week old australian shepperd mix in Ga.,who im told is depth perception deficient. They told me her vision is fine and the vet does not expect it to progress as she get's older, but of course there is no certainty and she will have to be monitored as she get's older.I'm trying to read more about this as I wait for them to contact me with all the information.I'm just wondering how serious this could end up being and do you feel it would be a problem for her around our kids(ages 9,10,11,12)?

Answer
Hi Audra,

Usually the loss of vision (either all or partly) in one eye will be responsible for the loss of depth perception.

Because the puppy has only known life in this way, it's totally normal for him, though he may startle for when you come upon or touch him on the blind side. I don't think it would be a problem for this dog to be around children. This dog has only known life with reduced vision, or blindness.  To him, he's not at all handicapped!

The good news is, herding breeds have excellent peripheral vision, so that will help him adjustment and compensate for his bad vision.

Best of luck,

Patti
