New Puppy with older dog

Question
I have a year and a half old female golden retriever and we are thinking about getting another puppy female golden retriever. I just want to know what steps I need to take when I introduce them and also what problems could arise when having them live together. I will not let them sleep together or be left alone together. The year and half old golden retriever loves other dogs and when she sees them she sniffs and plays with them. I need to know a few things; What steps need to be taken when I introduce them? If they do not like each other how will I correct that problems? Also any advice you might have about this situation.
Thanks.

Answer
My first suggestion is to not get another female.  Occasionally, no matter what you do, the first and second dogs don't get along.  2 females is the combination most likely to be a problem.  Quite often a male and a female will settle into a partnership.

Where you are bringing a puppy into the home of  an older dog, it is invading the older dogs territory.  It needs to learn to submit to the older dog.  I don't think you need to do the introducing them on neutral territory.  I am not sure how much good that does with older dogs either.

What is important is to give both dogs good leadership.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
