Answer
Hi Priya,

It sounds like your dog has hurt his back. It's impossible to guess at the severity of the injury, it could be anything from a pulled muscle to a nerve problem, to herniated disk.

Because you don't know what the problem is, absolute rest is a must. If your dog is crate trained, crate him. Do not allow him to jump onto (or off) furniture. He should not be allowed to climb stairs, and should be gently carried outside if possible, and then be put back in his crate. If your dog is not crate trained, keep him in an environment that minimizes excessive movement, such as contained to part of a room with the help of a child gate.

If your dog is still having problems tomorrow morning, call your vet, to see if the doctor thinks he should be immediately seen. If you can't get a hold of your vet until Monday, he should be examined at that time.

The prognosis for animals with back pain varies widely. Some causes are readily treatable, while others are more serious. It all depends on your vet's findings.

Best of luck!
