Shredding Dog

Question
I have a 13 month old, lab/golden retriever mix. He doesn't just chew on things, he shreds- books, dvd's and cases, cd's, even his own toys. I've heard of Bitter Apple, but I can't really spray that on my books or his toys. I've been keeping him in a kennel while I'm at work, since that is the only time that he shreds, but I don't feel like this is fair since my other dog gets to roam free. What am I to do? I wonder if some of it is age, but if so, is there a certain time-frame?

Answer
Hi Danielle,

Containment in the crate is the answer. Your dog can't be trusted not to be destructive when he's left alone. Crating isn't at all cruel, and the dog that's being crated doesn't "mind" that your other dogs have the run of your home.

It would be really helpful to take "the edge" off your destructive dog's energy level. You should be sure to give this dog a good long walk, or long run in a park before you leave the house each day, and also upon your return. At 13 months, he's still very puppy-like and needs this extra exercise more than your other dogs do.  Also be sure to give him something to do besides destroy things, in the way of mentally stimulating toys. A Kong toy, or BusterCube stuffed with a combo of healthy snacks or even his regular dog food is a great way to occupy him when he's left alone.

When a dog can have the run of a house isn't based on age, it's based on behavior. Your dog will learn, and I think the extra exercise will go a long way in helping.

Best of luck,

Patti
