Question
Is  cashew- the fruit,  raw, dangerous for puppies, I have an 8 month old miniature schnauzer, and he has  been  eating  this fruit lately.
Is  it  poisonous?  Thanks

Answer

Hi Marylo,

Too many of any kind of nut can be a problem for dogs. The high fat content in nuts can cause mild vomiting or diarrhea, or possibly pancreatitis if they eat too many. Salted nuts should be avoided because an excess of salt can lead to excessive thirst and urination, or even sodium toxicosis (salt poisoning.) However, only Macadamia Nuts are truly toxic to dogs. An occasional raw or roasted Cashew nut or two probably won't hurt your dog.

If I've misunderstood your question, and you're referring the the Cashew Apple (the fruit from which the Cashew Nut grows) is something you shouldn't feed to your dog because it's a potent diuretic (elevates the rate of urination). Cashew apples might be more fiber than your dog needs.

If you're wondering about other dog-safe fruits and vegetables, here's a short list:

Banana
Apple (not the seeds)
Pears
Mangos
Mellon
Pineapple
Apricots (not the pits)
Peaches (not the pits)
Berries
Carrots
Cabbage
Lettuce
Spinach
Cucumber
Beets
Zucchini/ Squashes
Green Beans
Peas
Sweet Peppers
Cooked Beans
Broccoli (cooked)

Remember, fruits and veggies contain a lot of roughage, and can lead to a case of of loose stools or an upset stomach. Go easy with them until you see how well your dog tolerates them.

The following are toxic to dogs to one degree or another, so it's best to avoid them:

Avocado
Nutmeg
Onions
Garlic
Leeks
Shallots
Grapes
Raisins
Prunes
Chocolate (baking and dark chocolate are the most dangerous)

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
