Question
Hi Susan,
my puppy cocker spaniel will be 1 year old in May of this year and his stomach has been making these weird, loud, and queezy noises every five seconds...literally! I have no idea what this is from, and he doesn't seem to be acting any differently. It's just the noises...any ideas?

Answer
Hello Kirsten,

When the digestive tract becomes hyperactive, it can make various rumbling and growling sounds called borborygmus. This is due to the production of intestinal gas combined with the movements of the intestines called peristalsis. While it is normal to have a certain amount of borborygmus
it can in some cases be the result of an underlying problem such as an intestinal irritation. This may simply be due to an empty stomach, swallowing air from eating too quickly or gulping during eating, or excessive bacterial fermentation caused by a diet high in soybean or fibre, or from eating spoiled food.

Borborygmus can also be an indication of an underlying medical problem.
Such disorders can be diseases that result in faulty absorption of nutrients and maldigestion disorders, poor digestion can alter the bacterial flora in the gut and lead to intestinal symptoms that include borborygmus.
Intestinal parasites, inflammation, and dietary intolerance can all lead to borborygmus. Dietary intolerance, also known as adverse food reaction or food allergy, can be a major cause of increased intestinal sounds.

Something that you can try on your own is to change your dog's diet to a hypoallergenic one and see if this resolves the noises you are hearing. This diet should be fed exclusively for at least seven to 10 days. Flint River Ranch Lamb, Millet & Rice is a good one.  Adding a probiotic or a diet containing healthy intestinal bacterial flora such as bifidobacterium and acidophilus and evening primrose oil and Alfalfa.  NuVet Plus supplements are a good source of these.

Hope this gives you a better understanding of stomach noise and the probable cause.  Most of the time it is quit normal.  Try the food change, add the NuVet (you do need an order code to buy that you may use mine 42299) or call 1800-474-7044 let them know Susan from Spotts Grooming referred you.  Also ask about saving 15% on your order.  Try it for 60 days and if you don't see a change there is a 100% money back guarantee.
