Question
I have a 3 year old toy australian shepard. He got parvo when he was a puppy and ever since then he has had an extremly sensitive stomach. For probablly the past year he has coughed every time he drinks.. hes not excited when he does it. He even will cough right after he wakes up. He has also has a very gurgly stomach and he throws up if he eats more than a couple hand fulls of dog food at a time. I just want to know if you have any ideas of what it might be. Im just curious and worried because it seems to b getting worse.

Answer
Hi Sheyan,

Thank you for writing to me.

I don't think that Parvo is related to your dog's coughing and sensitive stomach issues.  He may possibly suffer from food allergis.  I would suggest trying a fish food such as Solid Gold Fish and Potato or Orijen Six Fish.  Make the change slowly to avoid diarrhea.

When you feed him, put some Prozyme into the food to help digestion.  (J-B Wholesale Pet Supply).  Also put a dropfull of Slippery Elm Bark Tincture into the food as well.  GAIA makes an excellent brand.  You can get this at the health food store or on line.

You must have your dog's digestive issues checked out by a specialist.  It is not normal that he cannot eat normally.  If you are feeding dry food, wet it and let it sit for awhile.  It is difficult for a dog to digest dry food unless it is wet first.  You can also add some wet canned food in with the dry with a little water.

Do not exercise your dog one hour before meals or two hours after.

Best of luck,
Shelley Davis
