Question
I have a 2 year old Yorkie that was my fathers. He has incepitis diabetes and drinks a ton of water due to this. The vet said he should not go more than 2 hours without water. He does take pills. During the day he pees and poops outside. At night he pees and poops inside. I do not feel that I can kennel him for 8 hours without water or hold water from him. I did try kenneling him and he did pee in the kennel as he had to go so bad since he pees all the time.We are so frustrated. If I put a diaper on him he pees so much it would overflow. He is the sweetest little guy but we just do not know what to do. Help please.

Answer

Hi Maria,

Rather than use a crate to keep him in at night, try containing him in either part of a room or use an indoor dog pen.

Giving him have the run of your home or leaving him shut in one room overnight will give him lots of places to soil. He unfortunately can't help himself and will soil during the over night, the point is to contain him to a small enough area where he can soil, but still have a dry area to sleep and have his water, and will be easier to clean up. You could use a child-gate or two to section off a room (with tile or vinyl flooring, preferably) for the overnight time period. Lay a thick layer of newspaper over the entire containment area, so the invertible clean ups will be easier. The other option I mentioned is to use an indoor dog pen. They come in different sizes, styles, and prices, this is the basic kind I'm talking about:

As with the child-gate option, you'll want to lay a thick layer of newspaper over the floor of the entire dog pen.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
