dry food w/ healthy canned food

sorry for such a vague question, but i have been reading previous q's and a's on this website and it appears some brands are clearly better than others. would a dog be getting proper nutrition if it was fed an average quality dry food (like Iams)mixed with a high quality canned food (like wellness)? i have an 8 year old shih tzu by the way, whose diet I want to change from home prepared meals to commercial brands.

First, please accept my apologies for taking so long to respond.  We were without power for some time, followed by the holiday.

Anyway, going from home cooking, I would suggest going with a higher quality food than Iams.  You may consider foods like Innova, Orijen, Evo or Timberwolf combined with canned foods from Nature's Variety, Innova, Evo or Timberwolf.

The quality of ingredients used in those foods certainly exceeds the quality of ingredients in Iams.
