Question
I am about to me a new mommy to my first yorkie, she is only 2 weeks old so I have a little while before I get to bring her home. I do have a miniature male daschund at home already, he is about 2 years old, he has been neutered. Do you think they will get along?

Answer
Terri,

That will depend on the temperament of the male that you have.  Usually if you bring a puppy into the home when there is an adult dog everything will work out fine.  You will go through a period of jealousy on the part of the adult but they will eventually warm up to the puppy.  I have never had a problem bringing a puppy into the home with adult dogs but there are people who have.

If you adult is aggressive or extremely spoiled than you may have problems.  In the beginning it is not unusual for the adult to growl, bark or snap at the puppy.  This is the way that the adult dog shows the puppy that there are boundaries that cannot be crossed.  This behavior is harmless and completely normal.  If however, the adult actually bites the puppy then you will know that you are going to have a problem.  Although it is in extreme cases only adults have been known to kill the puppies.  You should keep a close eye on how your adult acts towards the puppy for the first few months and after that if you have not had any problems then things should work out just fine.
