Question
our 1 1/2 year old female has become larger than expected.  Her male is 5 lbs and is about3 inches shorter.  Do you think that is too much difference in size?

Answer
Anita,

The standard I used for breeding was a 2.5 pound male to a 5 pound female.  The reason for this was because people wanted small puppies, that is what sold.  That being said, as long as the male is smaller than the female you can breed them without having to worry about to many complications.  If the female is smaller you will have problems because of puppies too large for the mother to have etc.  Because your female is larger than the male you should not have this problem.  You can still sell puppies that are not going to be small but you will have a harder time selling them and you will not get near as much money.  I would expect the puppies to be anywhere from 5 - 10 pounds and unfortunately you really can't tell until they are about six months old how big they are going to be.  I think you found that out the hard way.  The one good thing is that a nine pound female will probably have a large litter (up to five pups) and so even though you will not get as much money for them you may make out ok because you have so many.  The average litter for a small Yorkie is 1 to 3.  If you are considering having puppies please do some research first to make sure that is really what you want to do.  There is a lot involved with having puppies (vet bills, the delivery, complications etc.) that you will need to know in order to make your decision.  I hope that helps! Good luck in whatever you decide.

Sincerely,

Melinda
