Question
QUESTION: Hi Melinda, please advise what are the chances of my 10month old yorkie being pregnant ?my male tied with her on the 14th oct, she has swollen boobs but not really a swollen pee pee, im worried as i was not aware of his my mother let her out while i was at work and only just told me of this.I do not want her to die, what are the chances she could be pregnant at such a young age or for her to go on and have the pups assuming she is pregant?

ANSWER: Samantha,

The fact that she has swollen boobs and it has been only a little over two weeks since she tied is puzzling.  At ten months old she could very much get pregnant but I would not expect her breasts to swell until about two weeks before she was due. Is her pee pee less swollen than when she was in heat?  If so I would say she is not pregnant.  However, weirder things have happened.  How big is the male that she mated with?  When your mother let her out could another dog have mated with her?  If she is pregnant and you are sure that the male that mated with her is smaller than her then she should be alright.  Of course it is not good for her to have a litter of pups at such a young age because she is still growing but the alternatives are also not good.  In order to stop the pregnancy they would have to spay her and then she would never be able to have puppies.  There is a shot that can be given but it must be done in the first few days and you are well past that now.  The gestation period for a dog is nine weeks so right now she would be about two months pregnant by human standards.  The swollen breasts could be a hormonal thing but only your vet can tell you that.  If the dog she mated with was larger than her you may have a problem because what usually happens is that the puppies are too large for her to have and a c-section must be done.  How big is your female?  Let me know the answer to some of the questions I asked and I will be able to answer your questions better.

Sincerely,

Melinda

QUESTION: Hi Melinda, the male that mated her is quite a bit bigger, unsure of their weights, but the male is a similar size to a small westie, however he is a yorkie but stocky,I will follow up with the vets in a week or two as i have read that the pee pee can get swollen up to 5 times but to be perfectly honest it looks the same as when she was in heat. And there is no chance of another dog getting hold of her it was definatley him, i came home they were tied in the garden - totally gutted and worried dont want anything to happen to her x thanks for oyur response

Answer
Samantha,

I am glad you are going to follow up with the vet.  The fact that she is so young and that he is bigger than her is not good.  The recommended breeding size is a five pound female and a 2.5 to 3 pound male.  You cannot imagine how horrible it is when you have to stand by and watch your baby struggle to have her pups, the terror of racing to the vet and then her having to be put through an emergency c-section.  The puppies have about a 50/50 chance of survival because they get so stressed when they can't come out naturally.  It is terrifying, and it costs a lot of money as well.  Make sure your vet knows about Yorkies and is a caring vet.  There are some out there who believe that because it is a dog you don't have to worry about it.  They believe that nature will work itself out.  They are somewhat right but what they don't realize is that nature can be cruel.  Good Luck to you and your baby girl.

Sincerely,

Melinda
