Question
I just got a yorkshire 2 days ago its name is Jasper and he is a male i am very clueless how to be with him since i have never had a dog before, most of the time he is very clam and sleeps, but when i get home from work he starts barking and running backwards and trying to jump up at me like he will attack me, i try to go near him to pick up but he doesn't let me he barks louder and runs backwards, he also does not let me clean his eye boogers he keeps trying to bite if you go near him, i know his bite wont hurt but why does is he acting like this, please give me lots of tips on how to be with him, i especially don't understand why he barks so loud and runs backwards.

Answer
Prakriti,

You didn't say how old the Yorkie was.  If he is full grown then the reasons he acts like he does have something to do with the environment he came from.  I would also like to point out that his bite can and will hurt, take it from someone who has been bitten by a Yorkie in the past.  The questions I would need to know the answers to in order to give you a better answer are as follows:

How old is the Yorkie?
Has he been fixed?
Where did you get him?
What was the reason the previous owners got rid of him?
Has he had all of his shots?

I suspect that his behavior problems is what prompted the previous owners to get rid of him and that his bad behavior is something that you cannot change.  If you were looking for a sweet Yorkie that you could cuddle up with then this male is not what you were looking for.  You may need to consider getting a different Yorkie (preferably a puppy that you can teach to be loveable) and finding another home for the male.  Once a bad personality is ingrained in a dog it is next to impossible to change it.

Sincerely,

Melinda
