Protective Male Yorkie

Question
When my 1 year old male Yorkie is sitting with me and my
Son comes in the room he starts barking and becomes aggressive.  This scares my Son who is special needs.  I just want them to get along and for my Son not to be afraid of our Yorkie....Any suggestions.  Thank you.

Answer
Maurine,

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it.  Yorkies typically attach themselves to a particular person in the family.  When they do this they are sometimes over protective of that person. I may have some suggestions on how to handle it if I knew a little bit more about how he acts and what the different situations are.  Does he act this way only when he is on your lap?  Does your son interact with the dog normally ie, plays with him, feeds him etc?  How old is your son and how severe are his special needs?  Are you able to talk to him about why the dog acts this way and would he understand?  If I gave you some suggestions that would include your son would he be able to take direction from you?

If you could answer these questions I would be happy to try and figure out something that would make the situation better.
