Help 5lb Yorkie Teenie mother to be

Question
Hi Melanie,
I have a 5lb, 15 months old female yorkie named Teenie (mother to be)and a 7lb, 7 year old male named Tiny. I've been keeping them separate for the most part. However, I let them run the back yard every day. I caught them together on Nov 4th and now Teenie is going to be a mommy. She started having morning sickness, and wanting to be held a lot. She is now showing.
This is my first time ever, and I don't know how or what I need to look for or what to do.
Would you please give me the run down on this.
Thanks so much for your time in advance and for your kindness.

Peggy

Answer
Peggy,

The first thing you will need to do is to take Teenie to the vet.  Because the male she bred with is larger than her she could have complications when she delivers her puppies.  If she only has one or two puppies she may not be able to deliver them naturally because they may be to big.  Your vet should be able to tell you how many puppies she has.

The gestation period for a dog is nine weeks.  That would mean that the puppies are due around the first week of January.  They usually do not start showing until two to three weeks before they deliver and since she is showing already I am a little concerned about the size of the puppies.

I have a word document that I can email you that would cover everything you need to know about breeding Yorkies.  If you would like me to send it to you send me your email address and I will send it.

Please excuse the delay in my response because my email was down all day yesterday.

Sincerely,

Melinda
