My female Yorkie, Grace

Question
Hi Melinda,

I have a female Yorkie, Grace, who was born 6.6.07 and is now 8 months old.  Her vet suggested we allow her to go through one heat before spaying her.  When can I expect her first heat to begin?

Also.... she has displayed behavior lately that reminds me more of a male dog.  While playing, she will wrap both front paws around my arm and begin what seems like a male dog "humping" movement (for lack of a better word!)... Is this normal for a female?

Thanks for any help you can offer me!

Debra

Answer
Debra,

Did you ask your vet why she thinks you should wait until her second heat?  Most dogs ( at least ever one I've ever known ) can be fixed when they are six months old.  In fact vets usually encourage you to get them fixed as soon as they turn six months old.  I'm not going to tell you to go against your vet but you may want to ask her why she thinks you should wait.

The rule of thumb with most yorkies is the smaller they are the longer it takes for them to have their first heat.  Large dogs usually go into heat every six months like clockwork but yorkies can go into heat anytime between 6 months to 18 months.

As far as the humping (that is the appropriate word) that is not abnormal.  I have had females who did that for no apparent reason and others that never did it.  I would say that she probably will stop doing it after she gets spayed.

Good Luck with your little girl!
