Question
We just purchased a 1-year-old male yorkie for our 12-year-old son's birthday.  He is adorbable, although has had a bad haircut so waiting on his hair to grow out.  I have a question regarding his tongue.  He keeps it on the side of his mouth 95% of the time and licks only on that side.  Is that a normal behavior in dogs?  I have never seen it and just wondering.

Thanks
Missy

Answer
Missy,

I have never witnessed that behavior in a young dog.  Often times the tongue will hang out one side of the mouth when they are older because they have lost one of their canine teeth.  The long pointy teeth in the front are what keeps the tongue in the mouth.  If a canine tooth is missing then the tongue will hang out.

The other possibility is that he may have a problem with his teeth or his mouth.  You may want to have the vet check his mouth just to be sure there is nothing wrong.
