Male to large to breed?

20 11:37:56

Question
I have an opportunity to get a 1 year old male Yorkie from good bloodlines at a great price. My only concern is if he may be too large for me to breed. He weighs in about 9-10 pounds. I know very little about this sort of thing as my wife and I are just now considering breeding. Do you think I would have problems finding people that would want to work with such a large dog? Any info you can provide will be helpful. Thank you!

Answer
Troy,

Unless you are planning on breeding him with a ten pound female he is too large to breed.  The optimal breeding size is a five pound female to a 2.5 to 3 pound male.  You cannot breed a male with a smaller female because the risk of serious complications is high.  It is not even recommended that you breed a male and female that are the same size.

The complications can be puppies that are too large for the female to give birth to.  If that happens you usually have to have an emergency c-section which can kill the puppies and the mother.

Also, if you are planning on breeding you would have a hard time finding anyone who would want to use your male for a stud.  He is simply too large.

Most people want a teacup Yorkie and in order to get that size you have to breed a very small male with a medium size female (5 pounds or more).  So even if you did find someone to breed with, you would have a hard time selling the puppies because they would be large.

You know how they say if it seems to good to be true it usually is?  Well, a dog with a great bloodline at a great price should make you suspicious.  I think you kinda knew it was to good to be true or you wouldn't have gone searching for an answer.  Good thinking on your part.

Of course it is up to you what you do about the deal, but if you want more than just a pet I would look elsewhere.
