Question
I just noticed this morning my female yorkie has a wierd odor to her, her bottom is staying kind of moist and she is leaving orange spots on things. Could she be in heat....do i need to take her to the vet. Last week she was constipated and i thought she was going to die.But she got over that ..now this.

Answer
Julie,

If the spots are orange she is not in heat.  When their heat begins it is definitely red blood you will see.  A female Yorkie usually does not go into heat until they are at least six months old and can go as long as over a year before their first heat.  If you female was in heat that would be a first.  I am concerned about the moist bottom and the orange spots following what you described as constipation so bad you thought she was going to die.  Could what is happening now be a result of that trauma?  I would definitely take her to the vet so you can rule out anything serious and put your mind at ease.  The only other thing I can think of is to tell you that young puppies often have problems because their hair is long and they don't quite know how to manage it around their bottoms.  It will often become caked which can give them the appearance of having constipation.  You need to look and make sure the hair is cut away from her bottom in a fairly large swath so you can rule that out as a problem.

Sincerely,

Melinda
