Yorkshire terrier potty training

Question
I just acquired a 9 month old female Yorkie.  She knows to poop outside but has been trained to pee in her crate on pee pads.  This would be fine but I would prefer she not pee inside at all.  Is it unrealistic to expect her to hold it while I am at work and the kids are at school - 8-4 or 5?  She has access to water all day.

Answer
Belinda,

It is not unreasonable but having her trained on the pee pee pads seems great to me.  Yorkies are notorious for being difficult to potty train so if you have one that uses pee pee pads then I would not stop using them.  If the expense is a problem you can purchase reusable ones at any pet store.  You just toss them in the washing machines when they get soiled.  The initial cost is about 20.00 but it is worth it because you can wash them over and over and over again.  You could also purchase a doggie diaper for her and then if she has an accident while you are at work it won't matter because you can change her diaper when you come home.

Personally I think that having the pee pee pads available to her is a great idea because if she has to go she will use it and you don't have to worry about accidents while you are away.
