Yorkies Bad Teeth & Breath

Question
I've had my Yorkie's teeth cleaned by a vet this year  but his bad breath continues.  The vet explained that sometimes toy breeds have bad teeth.  My Yorkie is only 3 years old and he already has loose teeth and the vet removed 3 of his teeth.  I am really worried.  My vet says there is nothing to worry about, do you agree?

Answer
Eve,

I would like to preface my reply by first stating that since I do not know your dogs medical history and have not seen him personally I cannot comment on your vets diagnosis.

That being said, I would be worried too.  Yorkies do have bad breath and they also are known for having bad teeth.  Most Yorkies who live to be over the age of ten will not have all of their teeth.  However, they usually don't start loosing them until they are much older than three years of age.  As with everything in life diet plays a key part and dogs are no exception.  If you are feeding him soft or canned dog food you need to switch him over to hard dog food.  Because of their problems with their teeth soft dog food will only hasten the tarter buildup on the teeth and then they will rot faster.  Hard dog food helps to keep the tarter off the teeth.

If you have never had his teeth cleaned before then that could explain the loose teeth.  If you have had them cleaned before then I would be worried about his loose teeth because he is too young to have these kinds of problems.  You may have to brush his teeth everyday for a while until his gums are healed and get stronger.  Again, without actually seeing inside his mouth and knowing what his diet is it is difficult for me to answer your question.
