Question
Ive read some sites recommending leaving fresh dry food out throughout the day as yorkies will not overeat. But the sales lady at the pet store recommended feeding twice a day, which do you think it's best for a 4month old baby girl yorkie, with a great appetite. She weighs in at 3.5lbs at 4months.

Answer
Cynthia,

People who work in pet stores are not necessarily qualified to answer questions on pets.  I would say that the lady in the pet store probably has a dog and only feeds it twice a day.  The first thing I would ask is how big were your females parents.  If they were over 5 pounds then your baby is probably the weight she would be regardless of how much she eats.  Puppies are like children, they have growth spurts.  She will gain weight and seem pudgy and then have a growth spurt and then be proportioned again.

When and what to feed your dog is a matter of choice and everyone does it differently.  I have never fed my dogs on a schedule of x number of times a day.  Because Yorkies are small dogs and sometimes picky eaters I have always left dry dog food down for them 24/7.  I also don't feed them canned or wet dog food because it can put more weight on them than dry.  The dry dog food also keeps the inevitable tarter off of the teeth better than canned dog food.

If you dog has a healthy appetite and you start feeding her twice a day then she will probably gorge herself when she finally gets to eat.  This is not a good idea because it teaches her that when she sees food she should eat as much as she can as fast as she can because it will be a while till she gets to eat again.  Which in my opinion would cause her to overeat as an adult.

The opinions on this subject are diverse so you will have to decide which ones you believe to be true for your baby.
