Question
QUESTION: My one-year-old yorkie is due to have one baby on January 25th.  She weighs 6.2 now, before becoming pregnant she weighed about 4 pounds.  I know she is very young to be having a baby but my male yorkie couldn't contain himself. The vet says that everything will probably go fine and that mother nature should take its course, but is there anything else I should know or do for my yorkie to help her with this?  Thank you!

ANSWER: Jeanine,

How large is your male?  If he is as large as or bigger than you female you may not like the course that nature takes.  Because the puppy has had all the nourishment it wanted and there are no other puppies he will probably be very large when born.  It is possible based on the size of your male that she will not be able to deliver the puppy.  I hate it when vets say that nature will take its course.  Nature can be very cruel.  I cannot answer your question until I know the size of your male.  His size will impact my answer.

QUESTION: My male weighs 6 pounds.  Thanks.

Answer
Jeanine,

Your female has a good chance of not being able to deliver the puppy because it will probably be to large.  You will need to make sure that your vet is available 24/7 in the event that she cannot deliver the puppy.  I have a word document that explains the breeding process and has a section on what to do if your female has complications during birth.  If you send me your email address I can send it to you.
