Yorkshire Terrier - strange behaviour!

Question
I have 2 female Yorkshire Terriers - 6yrs and 2yrs. Both were nuetered at 6 months. The older dog has is now going through periods of strange behaviour. She has in the past tried to "mate" with soft toys and gets very posssive of them.  More recently it's been with a blanket.  Is this usual or is it a canine menopause???  Please help

Answer
Dear Noeleen,

Welcome to the strange and wondrous world of Yorkie behavior.  There is never a dull moment.  Their behavior is not menopause.  All dogs have a natural urge through nature to want to procreate and have puppies.  There are no exceptions to this rule of nature and getting a male or female fixed does not stop them from having the urges.  Think of it the same as people, if a male has a vasectomy does that stop him from wanting to?

That being said, no two Yorkies are alike.  That is one of the great things about them.  They all have very individual behaviors.  I had a female who would prepare a bed like she was going to have puppies and when there were no puppies she didn't care she just got some stuffed animals and put them in the bed and pretended that was her family.  If you tried to take the stuffed animals away from her she was ferocious just like any female would be with her pups.  This would last for varying amounts of time but eventually she would tire of it or just give up (I guess cause her puppies never grew up) and she would abandon the stuffed animals.

I would say don't worry about her unless she becomes so aggressive that you have to worry she will bite someone.  Yorkies are very family oriented and that shows in the way they want to have puppies even when they can't.  So don't worry, just love your babies and try to accept their sometimes strange behavior as part of what makes them so special.

I hope this helps!

Melinda
