Question
Hi I just got my pup 2 nights ago and she is darling as all little ones are. I haven't had a pup in a while and are wondering she seems warm most of the time it feels feverish to me she was whelped on 6/22/08 a little over 8wks she woke up last nights heaving pup food on the bedding and she slept a lot today and didn't eat much. I just want to know if this is just normal with being in a new home? or should I worry? I appreciate your time Amanda

Answer
Amanda,

Anytime a puppy throws up it is cause for concern.  There are many variables that can cause that to occur.  If she was not fed well then she will gulp her food and then it will come back up.  If she has parvo virus (which would kill her very quickly) she will throw up and have diarrhea.  Changing her food from what she has been fed from the breeder or feeding her a puppy food that is too rich for her delicate digestive system can also cause this to happen.

Sleeping a lot is not unusual.  Puppies typically will play hard for a short period of time and then they crash very hard for a period of time.  This cycle is repeated over and over each day.  I would be concerned only if your puppy was not playing between the times that she is sleeping.

You mention that she seems warm most of the time and it feels feverish to you.  Dogs can feel warm to the touch but if you feel in between their toes and it feel particularly warm or sweaty then it is possible that she has a temperature.

If it were my puppy I would rather err on the side of caution.  I would take her to the vet to make sure there is nothing wrong with her.  Yorkies are small which puts them at a higher risk of dying when they are ill.
