Female too large?

Question
Hi!  I have a 19 month old female who is approximately 9 1/2 pounds and I was wondering if she is too large to breed?  I know of a few registered males in the area that are between 4.5-5 pounds which I was considering.  A breeder friend told me she would make a great breeding bitch because of her size, temperament, coloring and coat.  I love her dearly so I would not want to see anything happen to her.  Have you ever found the larger females to have problems?  Thank you and if you could send me as much information as possible I would greatly appreciate it.  Her 3rd cycle is due to begin at the end of January so I don't have much time!  Laura

Answer
Laura,

She is not too large to breed.  The only suggestion I would make is to find a stud that is 3 pounds to breed her with.  Because of her size the puppies will probably be large and most people want small puppies.  If you breed her with a 3 pound male the puppies should be about 5 pounds full grown and most people would buy them.  With a small male you would probably get a large litter as well which would increase your revenue.  I had a ten pound female and she never had problems with childbirth.
