Question
I have a yorkie who will be 4 years old on March 30th, she has not gone into heat in over a year.  Should I be concerned or is this normal?

Answer
Amanda,

It is usually nothing to worry about.  It is not uncommon for small dogs to have a larger period of time between heats than large dogs.  I have had some that went 18 months before having a heat.  Usually after their first two heats they settle into a pattern and their heats are somewhat predictable.  If she has not had a heat by 18 months I would take her to the vet to have her checked out.
