Question
How long should I feed my yorkie puppy food? He's 9 months old and seems to
be filling out well but I am afraid he will get over weight. I only feed him an all
organic diet but it's not vegan and I am considering a vegan dog food would
that be a good idea for yorkies?

Answer
Erika,

I have to admit that your question is a first for me.  I have never known anyone who was considering feeding their Yorkie a vegan diet.  I often compare dog issues with people issues because some of the principles are the same.  An example would be that when teaching discipline consistency is the key.  This applies to both human children and puppies.  I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it is possible that the same nutritional rules for human nutrition could apply to dogs as well.

There is great debate about whether humans need animal protein to survive and help maintain a balanced diet.  The general consensus is that our bodies need the protein and fat that meat provides but there are also those who believe that a vegan diet is healthier.

Because the argument on both sides seems to be valid whether to eat meat or adhere to a vegan diet comes down to what each individual person believes. Therefore, if you believe that a vegan diet for your dog would be the best thing for his health then that is the path you should take.

Now, with all of that being said my personal opinion is that dogs should eat dog food.  Hard dog food is the best choice for Yorkies because of the problems they have with tarter build up on the teeth.  The hard dog food helps slow the tarter so they don't have to have their teeth cleaned as often.  Nutritionally dog food provides everything they need.  I would not be concerned about my Yorkie being overweight.  They are small dogs and usually will only eat what they require.

As I said before ultimately the decision is up to you because only you can decide what is best for your dog.
