Question
Hi, im buying a Yorkshire terrier puppy soon and have read up a great deal about them and one thing that keeps coming up is their barking habits. Is there an easy way to cut down the barking? Would it be easier if i got two for company (as every Friday i am out of the house for At least 4 hours at a time) or is this the completely wrong breed for me? I do not mind barking however not every time someone comes to the door or a noise is made. Please help as i was really looking forward to a breed of this kind. Many thanks

Answer
Emily,

Yorkies do not bark anymore than other breeds.  Unfortunately there is a misconception out there that small dogs are yappy, but that is simply not true.  The problem is the people and not the dog.  If a dog is allowed to bark when they are puppies then when they get older they will bark.  If you train them when they are young then you should have a well mannered dog.

You should be aware that dogs are supposed to bark when someone comes to the door.  That is something they are supposed to do.  Expecting them not to bark when someone comes to the door is unrealistic no matter what breed you purchase.  Having two dogs will not stop the barking it will probably increase it because when one dog barks then the other will bark also.

You can try to teach your dog not to bark but you will have to be very rigid and strict if you hope to be successful.  The only other way to stop the barking is to purchase a no bark shock collar.
