Question
i have a yorkie and she is only abot 9 months old but she weighs 10 pounds is there something wrong with him? because his brother is half the size as my pup! plus we have papers and eveything that proves its a full bloos yorkie?

Answer
Katie,

First of all let me start by saying there is nothing wrong with your baby.  However, having papers does not guarantee that your Yorkie is full blooded.  Somewhere in the bloodline large Yorkies were introduced.  As with anything that has to do with genetics (like size) the genes can be present but dormant.  Dormant genes can go undetected for several generations and then appear for no reason.  Think of it like people who have twins in their family.  Usually the gene skips a generation and while the mother may have had twins the daughter doesn't necessarily have them but the granddaughter probably will.

This is not to say that your breeder purposely deceived you.  She may not have known that their was a large dog somewhere back in the line.  I had a 5 pound female that I bred to a 3 pound male.  She had a litter of three puppies.  I kept the largest one because I wanted another one for breeding.  It turned out that the one I kept only got to 4 pounds and I couldn't breed her.  The next time I bred the same female with a different male (about 3.5 pounds) and she had another litter of three puppies.  Again, I kept the largest female.  She ended up being 10 pounds full grown.  So, somewhere in the bloodline there were large Yorkies.

The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America states that a true Yorkie cannot weigh more than 7 pounds.  There are Yorkies out there however, that weigh as much as 25 pounds.  Their owners have papers for them as well.  In reality there are very few people who can be assured that the bloodline is pure.  I would say that people who are in the business of showing dogs and making money at it are probably the ones who have the closest thing to purebred dogs.

With all of that being said, if you love your baby who cares how big she is or if her bloodline is pure.  My ten pounder was the sweetest thing ever and she was the best mom I ever had.  I never had any trouble selling her puppies because when people came to see her they didn't care about her being ten pounds because she was so sweet and pretty.  Some actually requested puppies from her in the hopes that they would be larger and not as frail and fragile as the really small ones.
