2 new puppies

Question
Hi there, I have a couple questions that I am hoping you can help to answer.  Firstly, we just got 2 new puppies, one is a jack russell terrier and the other is a cavalier king charles spaniel.
They get along great but I feel that they might be undermining each other's house breaking.  Samson (JRT) absolutely refuses to do his business out side which causes Charlie(CKCS)to follow his lead and pee inside when she sees his doing it.  Any suggestions?
How do I encourage Samson to do his business outside?  I have literally spent a half hour outside walking him around to no avail only to come indoors and have him squat almost immediately.
We were also wondering about crate training 2 puppies at once using the same crate?  Good idea or bad and any suggestions?
Thanks for all of your help.

I would recommend using 2 crates starting sooner rather than later.  The reason I would do it that way is that I would want them each to have their own space that they are comfortable with for when they get older.  Sampson is very likely to be the dominant one of the 2, so you will want to make sure Charlie has her own personal space.  That way she can take a break if he just gets to be too much for her.

Yes, they are likely to pee where each other goes. It's called over-peeing, and all dogs do it. My own dogs who have lived together for years do it outside. I've been to dog gatherings where as many as 15 dogs would take turns at a particular bush (including the girls).

There are some little posts they sell to put into the yard that has pee smell on it, but there is a lower tech way to do it. You can save just a little human urine and put it on a bush or tree where you normally walk.

Then you can add strong positive reinforcement for when they get it right - 5-10 tiny pieces of cheese or the like (1/2 the size of a pencil eraser) and praise in a higher than normal happy voice.  Give treats one right after another.  Dogs react better to numerous treats one right after another than one treat of a bigger piece.

Also make sure to take them out right after you feed them, and as soon as you come home.  I recommend taking them out every hour until they start getting the drift.  That's how I housetrain the adult puppymill survivors than I foster.

If you do not act angry when they make a mistake, but immediately take them out (though not expecting them to do anything at that point), treat and praise when they do get it right, use a crate whenever you're not around and make sure to clean up with an enzyme cleaner, the kids should get the idea.  It will be tougher with 2, but being consistent will help.

Good luck !
