my one year old, male west highland terrier has developed pink coloration around the eyes. can you tell me why this should happen and should I be worried?

I trust you're referring to the skin around the eyes, as opposed to in the whites of his eyes.

It's probably not anything very serious, but you should get him in to your vet as soon as you can get an appointment.

I'm not a vet, and certainly without seeing it, I can;t even make a guess.  I would take him to the vet if her were mine.  There are too many possibilities - some of which are nothing at all, and others that can be serious.
