Pug Breeding/reputable breeders

Question
I'm doing research, and one thing I know is that a lot of pet stores claim to purchase the puppies they sell from reputable kennels, but my research shows this is a fabrication and most puppies come from mass producing kennels also known as puppy mills.

In your experience as a pug expert... pugs are very popular at pet stores... do you know of any reputable breeder that will sell their pups to a pet store?

what about advertising in news papers. What do you feel the percentage of pugs you see in newspapers end up coming from established and trusted breeders?

can I use your quote in the book, and if yes, would you like to be cited as a resource or remain anonymous?

Answer
Andrea,

I don't think you generalize how good a breeder is by where they sell their puppies.  I know some very good kennels that sell to pet stores, but they probably do tend to be larger scale kennels.

The problem with buying from a pet store is that you do not know the breeder.  There is no way to tell if it is a good kennel or not.

Again, it is not good to generalize, but I would say that most breeders that advertise in the newspapers are smaller scale.  But that also might mean that they have less training and experience - more of a backyard breeder.  Also you may get a large kennel that is selling rejected puppies from newspaper ads.

The best way to be sure you are getting a puppy from a good breeder is to buy direct from them.  You can also ask how long they have been raising the breed you are looking at and what kind of training the breeder has had.

I would not say that larger scale means bad breeder or smaller scale means good breeder.  You have to look at the individual kennel.  And you have to determine what is important to you.

This is just my opinion and don't think I would want to be cited as a resource in your book.

Hope this helps in your research!
