QuestionMy 2 1/2 yr old standard is preg. for the 2nd time. Her first litter was 3 pups and she had no problems. She is now at 65 days and has been spotting with a mucus discharge for the past 36 hours. She is HUGE this time, and I am concerned about her. She is not uncomfortable, other than being VERY preg., and does not appear to be in any distress. Should I call the vet, let her go, is she in labor. . ? She has a room to herself with a good whelping box which she goes and lays in for short periods, but she wanders alot, yet sleeps through the night O.K.
I would just like some reassurance I guess. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and welcome.
Thank-You
AnswerHello Cheri,
It sounds like your dog is getting close to delivering these puppies.
Have you noticed her nipples waxing yet. This is a sign that birthing is close. Her nipples will get a waxy substance on them and will sometimes spray out a little liquid.
You may also want to check her tempature. A dogs normal temp runs around 101.5, but when they get within about 24 hours from delivering, it will drop to around 98.0 If you have a digital themometer, those work best because they give you an accurate reading.
You should go ahead and just call your Vet to let him/her know whats going on, how far along she is and what your female is doing. He/she can reassure you that things are moving along normally.
Once labor starts, things should move along fine. Do call your Vet if she is in labor but hasn't produced a puppy after about 4 hours.
Give her a little more time and I am sure that her labor will begin when she is ready.
Congradulations, and if you have other questions or comments, please feel free to ask.
