Question
what is the best recommended dog food for pits?

Answer
Pit bulls are typically high-energy dogs that require well-balanced, high-protein food. Foods that contain high amounts of fillers- like animal byproducts, grain meals, etc- should be avoided for any dog, not just pits.

The general rule of thumb that I myself follow is this- Any food that you can buy at the grocery store is most likely not going to be something you should give your dog. There are a lot of people who think that, because dog food companies spend so much time researching foods, they would know what a dog needs and the foods they produce would be representative of that. One thing they forget, though, is that these companies are businesses and, as such, are in it for the profit they can make. Many well-known commercial dog foods are made of low-quality ingredients and things that you wouldn't even think of feeding your dog yourself if you knew exactly what it was.

There is actually a "grading scale" for dog foods if you wish to see how they are rated. It contains the instructions for rating your own food, and then gives examples of the ratings some more popular foods have. You can see it on the internet at: http://pug.meetup.com/112/boards/view/viewthread?thread=2648676
(Just copy and paste the url into your web browser). Now, the group you will be going to is a message group for people who have pugs. However, it is the same scale anyone else would use when trying to rate a food. It just happened to be the first url I came across when I googled the scale.

I feed my dogs Timberwolf Organics, usually the Ocean Blue variety. It is an all-natural, organic dog food that is high in protein, vitamins, and minerals. It is very low on fillers and has a well-balanced amount of meats, grains, fruits, and vegetables. Some of the ingredients are: white fish meal, salmon, potatoes, fish oils, kelp, alfalfa, carrots, blueberries, cranberries, and pears. Timberwolf also has other varieties of foods available. They do have a website if you want to check them out. It is www.timberwolforganics.com.

The url to the scale that I gave you will also show other foods that get a higher score on the scale. I recommend checking those out, as well.

I hope this helps you.
